How is your Boskoop doing?

Posted by Chris on April 25, 2010 at 11:27 AM

My "Boskoop Glory" grape has finally started to show shoots. I was worried the very cold temperatures over Winter had killed it but no. This was acquired the back end of last year from Wilkinsons discounted to £1.50 I think, as it was nearly dead. Great price. I purchased it as I had read this article from Bob Flowerdew here

This is one of two vines I have although the other is an unknown green variety that is about 3 years old and was a cutting from my parents plant

The shoot is about 2inch tall

Below my Jerusalem Artichoke is just starting to break through

The variety is unknown but it produces large smooth tubers to eat. I acquired my initial tubers from Freegle. The debris rounnd the shoots are hedge trimmings that during the Summer I put on the garden as a mulch and then dig in later in the year

Both my grape and Jerusulem artichokes were given to me by plot neighbours a couple of years back. The first has hardly grown and the second I grow more for the foliage and flowers than for eating as you can see -

The buds on my Cardinal Grape (4 year old) are still not doing anything. Hmmm... should I be worried? Also, my peas and beans have not sprouted yet either. :-(

Emily, that doesnt sound great but and this is the big one. both my grapes are in a unheated greenhouse, so if you grape vine is outside that may be why. As for the beans and peas. I havent even planted mine yet!!! you are on the ball. May be a second sowing if they really have failed.

My grape is outside as I am trying to train it to cover my pergola. The buds are still alive (itchy hands had to scrape one to see), so hopefully, it is due to spring being really late this year. After all, my plum and pears have just started blossoming last weekend.

Not that I am complaining, I have not seen any slugs this year either. By this time last year, I was already combating them hand and foot. This year, they've not even ventured near my young salads yet!

Hmm... I will resow some peas and bean. Hopefully, it will work this time.

Thats great to hear your grape vine is still hanging in there. Mine have only just started to show signs of life. They are also very sheltered but get quite a lot of sun so that is another reasons they are popping out.

Good luck with the second sowing and keep me updated on how they come on. I have just ordered some peas from realseeds "Champion of England" and I have some bean seeds (Scarlet Emperor) some where that will get planted soon. They always grow rampant in the garden which I just love. This will be my first year growing pea's, so fingers crossed
